The Tour

Your day begins as your private English-speaking driver greets you directly dockside at the Port of Civitavecchia in a premium luxury vehicle. Leaving the coastal plain behind, you will travel inland through the rolling, pastoral landscapes of northern Lazio (~50–60 minutes) to Sutri, an ancient settlement dramatically carved into volcanic tuff stone (tufo) that once served as a vital crossroads along the ancient Via Cassia and the pilgrimage route of the Via Francigena.
Begin your morning within the extraordinary Archaeological Park of Sutri. Stand inside the remarkable Roman Amphitheatre, unique for having been carved entirely out of the living bedrock rather than built with freestanding masonry. Wander past the ancient Etruscan necropolis, featuring dozens of rock-cut tomb chambers dating from the sixth to fourth centuries BC carved directly into the cliffside. The centerpiece of your visit is the Church of the Madonna del Parto—an evocative subterranean sanctuary hewn entirely out of the bedrock. Originally a pagan temple dedicated to the Persian god Mithras (Mitreo), it was later consecrated as a Christian church and adorned with delicate fourteenth-century frescoes. Following your visit, ascend to the tranquil, Italianate gardens of Villa Savorelli, an enchanting hillside park shaded by ancient holm oaks, offering sweeping panoramic vistas overlooking the amphitheater and the valley below. Conclude your morning passing through the historic stone gate into Sutri’s fortified medieval core, exploring quiet flagstone alleys leading to the peaceful Piazza del Comune.
Midday brings time to pause and savor the rich culinary heritage of the historic Tuscia region. Settle into a rustic village trattoria or a panoramic country estate to enjoy authentic regional comfort food—such as handmade lombrichelli pasta, wild boar stew (spezzatino di cinghiale), locally produced pecorino cheese, and artisan pastries made with the region's famous Roman hazelnuts (Nocciola Romana DOP), paired with fine regional wine.
In the afternoon, your driver chauffeurs you a short distance to the medieval town of Capranica, perched dramatically on a narrow, precipitous volcanic tuff promontory bordered by steep wooded ravines. Enter through the celebrated Porta dell'Orologio (Clock Tower Gate)—the historic bridge and archway dividing the historic burgh—into an atmospheric enclave where time appears to have stood completely still. Stroll along narrow, winding cobblestone streets flanked by ancient stone houses, admire the historic noble stronghold of Castello Anguillara, and visit the historic Romanesque Church of San Francesco. Following a peaceful, enriching day uncovering the ancient mysteries and authentic village life of the Roman countryside, sit back and unwind on a smooth, punctual return drive to the Port of Civitavecchia, arriving comfortably ahead of your cruise ship’s departure.
